Sumatra Silk Scarf. These handmade traditional silk
scarves from the island of Sumatra in Indonesia are truly
a collector's item. Rather than using the hot wax method of
separating colors to print the fabric, this technique has
the lines that separate the colors sewn in with heavy thread,
making hundreds and hundreds of stitches throughout the scarf.
Then each area, big and small, where there is a color variation,
is dipped, by hand, to acheive the desired color - you can
imagine what a lengthy process this is!
The sewing threads have been removed, but the needle points
remain. These will reduce in size and usually disappear, upon
washing and ironing, when the threads come back to size. We've
left the needle points intact, authenticating this unique
technique. It's another one of the disappearing arts from
an old culture.
